With so many hidden scenic spots in Antigua, hiking can be one of the best ways to explore the island’s beautiful scenery. There really is something for all ability levels with kid-friendly routes available. Check out three of our favourites below, all benefiting from magnificent views…
Shirley Heights Lookout Trail (rated moderately challenging)
Shirley Heights Lookout is perched approximately 490 feet above sea level. The clue is in the name, there are countless opportunities during this route to admire the stunning views across the crystal
blue ocean. You’ll be able to see the fantastic display of boats dotted around the English Harbour. On clear days, you can even see the distant Montserrat volcano. The lookout is particularly renowned for its spectacular sunsets, making it a favoured spot for both tourists and locals.
Whether you’re a nature lover, or simply seeking a vibrant cultural experience, Shirley Heights Lookout offers a unique blend of Antigua’s rich heritage and stunning landscapes. A brilliant hiking spot!
Pigeon Point Beach, Fort Cuyer and Fort Berkeley Circular (rated easy)
The Pigeon Point, Fort Cuyer, and Fort Berkeley Circular is a scenic 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) loop trail near English Harbour. This route typically takes about one hour to complete. It’s a popular choice for hiking and walking, especially between November and June, offering a blend of historical landmarks and picturesque coastal views.
Trail highlights include… 1) Pigeon Point Beach: The trail begins near Falmouth Harbour Marina, leading past Pigeon Point Beach – a serene sandy stretch ideal for swimming and observing sailboats. 2) Windward Beach: Continuing along the hillside, hikers pass Windward Beach, another tranquil spot showcasing Antigua’s coastal beauty. 3) Fort Cuyer: The route includes Fort Cuyer, offering insights into Antigua’s colonial military history. 4) Fort Berkeley: Dating back to 1704, Fort Berkeley is the oldest fortification in English Harbour. Accessible via a short nature trail, it provides panoramic views of the harbour and is a favoured spot for watching sailing regattas.
The route is a great option for bird enthusiasts, look out for Pelicans and Frigate Birds, and another fantastic route for seeing some of Antigua’s best views!
Pearns Point (rated easy)
We couldn’t not mention the walking route around the beautifully secluded Pearns Point. Immerse yourself in the wonderful fauna and flora of Antigua as you stroll through the impressive scenery.
The pristine peninsula is located on Antigua’s western coast, celebrated for its unspoiled natural beauty and exclusivity, boasting seven tranquil white-sand beaches, each providing a serene environment. Hikers can stop off at the elevated points on Pearns Point to admire the breathtaking views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea and neighbouring islands, including Montserrat, Redonda, St. Kitts, and Nevis.
