Antigua always benefits from a calendar of exciting events that celebrate its heritage, creativity and vibrant community, 2024 was no exception. From exhilarating regattas to lively carnivals and culinary delights, lets step back in time to remember some of our 2024 highlights…
RORC Caribbean 600 Ocean Sailing Race: The 15th edition was hosted in February at Fort Charlotte, Antigua. The RORC Caribbean 600 forms part of the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Season Points Championships, the world’s largest offshore racing series, which for 2024 also included the Roschier Baltic Sea Race, and the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Spectators from across the globe were in attendance.
Antigua and Barbuda International Kite Festival: Held on 1st April at Devil’s Bridge, the event saw the skies filled with colourful and traditional home-made kites, as Antiguan residents participated in the Easter Monday tradition. The vibrant display celebrated the art of kite flying, and featured a colourful display of kites from around the world, as well as offering entertainment, workshops and a kite-flying contest – it was a lively and family-orientated celebration.
Antigua and Barbuda Restaurant Week: A whole host of celebrity chefs and beverage professionals exclusively of Caribbean heritage participated in the second annual Restaurant Week in May. During the two-week-long celebration, visitors enjoyed a variety of special dining experiences and events, designed to showcase the twin island’s diverse food. The impressive line-up of chefs included Althea Brown, Chef Angel Barreto, Chef Shorne Benjamin and Chef Kareem Roberts.
This year also marked the return of the 100-day food and cultural pop up, by popular British chef Andrea ‘Andi’ Oliver, who is best known for her appearances on cooking show ‘Great British Menu’ and author of ‘The Pepperpot Diaries; Stories From My Caribbean Table’. For 100 days from the end of April, the pop-up hosted curated cultural content and events spanning food and drink, music, art, and film in its stay-all-day sustainable and eco-conscious setting.
Run in Paradise: In May, runners from around the globe joined forces in St John’s to immerse themselves in the glorious beaches, diverse neighbourhoods, breath-taking green landscape and electric atmosphere of the area whilst participating in the annual Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K or 5K race. What a wonderful way to take in some of Antigua’s most iconic views whilst surrounded with fellow inspirational runners.
International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup: West Indies partnered with the United States to host this year’s International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup in June. Antigua and Barbuda’s Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound was one of the nine venues taking part in the extensive match programme, a huge milestone!
Antigua Carnival: July saw the annual return of one of the Caribbean’s greatest summer festivals. The event is an annual highlight for locals and tourists alike. The celebrations truly encompass the vibrancy and diversity of Antiguan culture. From live music to street parties, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The historical event celebrates the emancipation from slavery. St John’s was filled with colourful costumes, traditional entertainment, food stalls and beautifully dressed floats.
Antigua & Barbuda Art Week: In November, the island showed off its artistic soul through this much-loved annual event. To celebrate the blossoming art scene across the twin nation, vibrant visual art, live music performances, spoken word performances, dance displays and fashion shows were showcased. Visitors participated in painting sessions, art talks, tours and workshops, all led by local artists.
The Jolly Harbour Yacht Club Regatta: The event celebrates all things sailing and is a testament to the vibrant spirit of the sailing community in Antigua. No matter your experience level, there was something for everyone to enjoy. A range of races across different courses will be took place, attendees experienced the perfect sailing conditions and crystal waters of Antigua.
The Antigua Charter Yacht Show: Earlier this month, the annual show elegantly displayed some of the world’s most beautiful boats for purchase and charter at Antigua Yacht Club Marina, Falmouth Harbour Marina and Nelson’s Dockyard. Although primarily a business event, it was quite the sight seeing them all lined up!
